They’re really hard! In fact, for many people, they’re not realistically an option yet—or at least, not for 20 seconds straight like Vince does them!

So what should you do if you’re stuck at 5… or 2… or even 0 push-ups? Simple: Use a variation that you CAN do for the entire 20 seconds straight! Here are three that you can swap into any workout!

Hands-elevated & Wall Push-up

For most people, this should be the go-to variation when on-the-floor push-ups are too hard. Why? Because it closely matches the straight body and tight core of floor push-ups, but can be scaled up or down as much as needed. The higher the elevation, the easier the push-up will be. The lower, the harder it will be. 

Don’t have a bench? You can use a countertop, the hood of your car, a step… whatever level allows you keep your reps clean for 20 seconds straight. When you’re just starting out, you can even use a wall! 

Knee push-ups

If someone tries to tell you that knee push-ups aren’t “real” push-ups, don’t listen! These work the chest, shoulders, arms, and upper back like any other variation! For most people, hands-elevated push-ups are a better way to build up to floor push-ups, but once you can do a few floor push-ups, knee push-ups are a perfect “burnout” exercise!
