There’s no single magical answer to solve all of these obstacles, but one thing is clear: getting more strategic in how you shop can definitely help! That’s why our senior-level nutrition expert and registered dietitian Coach Heather created this healthy shopping guide!

Rule 1. Have a plan
If you don’t have a shopping list locked and loaded, it can be a lot tougher resisting the temptations lurking in every aisle of the store. That’s why each and every one of our V Shred Custom Diet Plans comes with a shopping list at the end!
But even if you don’t have one of our plans yet, it’s still worth your time to have a list that sets you up for at least three days of food. You can even arrange it by category to help you be as time-efficient as possible, like this:
- Fresh produce
- Freezer case
- Dairy products and eggs
- Bulk grains
- Canned foods
- Fresh & frozen meat
- Sauces & condiments
Rule 2. Don't shop hungry
Hungry shoppers have a tendency to make, shall we say, questionable purchases. Sound familiar?
This is when a snack can be your best friend… and it’s why we always include 2-3 snacks a day on meal plans! No snack on-hand? A protein shake before shopping is a great choice, too!

Rule 3. Buy convenient foods
Intimidated by foods that require endless prep before you can eat them? You’re not alone! Especially when you’re just starting out, it’s perfectly OK to buy foods that are DESIGNED to make prepping meals EASIER!
A few to keep in mind include:
- Washed and cut vegetables
- Bagged salads
- Frozen fruit or veggies
- Rotisserie chickens
These can all help you stick with a goal-based eating approach and keep stacking up one quality meal after another!
Rule 4. Buy Big
Buying meat, veggies, grains and nuts in bulk can be a game-changer for people looking to improve their nutrition. It’s also pretty much the best way to SAVE money in the store!
Don’t have places to store bulk foods at home? Use the money you save to invest in bins, jars, and food storage containers!

Rule 5. Stock up on Spice
Believe it or not, you don’t need to be a professional CHEF to know how to make your food taste good!
Having a range of low-calorie, low-sugar sauces and salt-free seasonings is perhaps the simplest way to make a health or weight-loss focused meal plan match your tastes.
